UAB and AMPANS: a territorial model endorsed by occupational centers

"From the periphery to the community: the support of professionals in occupational centers" is the study of the Diversity and Orientation research group of the Autonomous University of Barcelona, presented as a final disertation, which evaluates the change in the occupational model that we have promoted for people with intellectual disabilities and dependency.

AMPANS implemented a major change in the Occupational Center service for people with intellectual disabilities in 2017, when the location in the territory is detected as a key element in the fulfillment of the purpose of full inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities in society.

The new strategy is based on decentralization: the only Occupational Center of the entity, located in the peripheral farm of Comabella, becomes a facility of several centers located in population centers of the Bages region, strategically located according to volume of need.

One of the factors that this new model works on is openness to citizens and networking with other entities and services in the municipality, with the desire to contribute and promote full inclusion as much as possible. The second key factor is the promotion of the autonomy of the people assisted in the centers, which will be enhanced and facilitated by the proximity of the spaces. A facilitating methodology so that the person with a disability has an active role and can exercise more control over their life and, at the same time, a proposal for a greater use of community resources and the natural support networks of the environment.

This new occupational service care model based on the inclusion and empowerment of the person has been evaluated in a study carried out by the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) which endorses the methodology and the results obtained.

"From the periphery to the community: the support of professionals in occupational centers"

A study by Blanca Domènech Pellejà and Joana Soler Torramilans

The occupational centers that assist people with intellectual disabilities are being transformed with the intention of getting closer to the community, seeking the social inclusion of the group through person-centered planning. The AMPANS Foundation follows this line. This is why it advocates a model of care for the individual and community inclusion and changes the location of the occupational center, from the periphery to the community. It studies how the change of location and the praxis of the professionals determine the development of the new model. The individualized planning and the community component, facilitated by the change of location, improving the quality of life of people with intellectual disabilities. The training and motivation of professionals and the community support network are both essential for the successful development of the model.

Relocating the occupational centers in the towns.

We committed to bringing the occupational service closer to municipal centers, based on a model of proximity and links to the community, and we do this with the help of local agents, councils, community services, entities, neighbors and others
