Reducing emissions in the cheese-making process with a biomass boiler
AMPANS, as a member of the voluntary agreements programme for the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, has been recognised this week among the third sector entities committed to reducing their carbon footprint.
The voluntary agreements programme for the reduction of greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, promoted by the Generalitat de Catalunya, was launched in 2010 through the Catalan Office for Climate Change. This programme offers tools, support and recognition to those organisations operating in Catalonia that voluntarily wish to establish a commitment to reduce their GHG emissions.
By means of an agreement, the organisations that, like AMPANS, join the programme, undertake to monitor their emissions and establish annual measures to reduce them.
The biomass boiler project at the Urpina estate was one of the projects recognised by the Department of Climate Action as part of the programme, and this Tuesday it received certification from the hands of the Minister of the Department of Climate Action at a ceremony held at the Centre of Contemporary Culture in Barcelona, which was also attended by the Director General of Environmental Quality and Climate Change, Mireia Boya.
The biomass boiler installed at the Urpina farm absorbs part of the demand for heat production and supports the pasteurisation of the milk used to make Muntanyola cheeses. The boiler is fed with wood chips from forestry management and vine shoot remains from the vineyards of the Urpina estate, as well as pruning remains from the AMPANS gardening section. The boiler reduces CO2 emissions in cheese production.
